For many Arizona drivers convicted of DUI, part of getting back on the road includes installing an ignition interlock device (IID).
What Is an IID?
An IID is a breath-testing device installed in your vehicle. Before starting the car — and sometimes during driving — you must blow into it to prove you’re sober.
Arizona IID Requirements
- Standard DUI: 12 months (may be reduced by MVD to 6 months)
- Extreme DUI: 12 months
- Super Extreme DUI: 18 months or more
- Repeat offenders: Even longer
Costs of an IID
- Installation: Typically $100–$200
- Monthly rental: Typically $70–$120
- Calibration and maintenance: additional fees
Over the course of a year, drivers can expect to pay $1,000+ just for the device.
Common Pitfalls
- False positives from mouthwash, certain foods, or medications
- Missed tests can trigger violations and extend your requirement
- Tampering with the device can lead to new criminal charges
Why Legal Help Matters
An attorney can sometimes negotiate reduced IID requirements — or even argue to avoid them altogether in certain cases.
